Going my way?

So you want to be a leader? Me too. Thanks for joining.

Throughout the history of time, or at least for as long as I can remember, scholars have always questioned: Are leaders born or made?

It’s the latter I intend to prove! I consider myself a practicing leader. Shaped and molded by wholistic experiences throughout my life. No one starts as an athlete, Picasso, or even rocket scientist; And all those titles are earned and forged through cycles of wash, rinse, and repeat.

Like every aspiring legend, we all have an origin story. I am the eldest boy of 19 kids on my dad’s side and four on my mother’s. The moment I could walk and talk, I was trained for a higher purpose – Taking care of others. An innate quality I have seen in leaders across the board, regardless of culture, race, socioeconomic status, and even spans generations. Thus, it is my theory that leadership is a service. I surmise that the want to lead comes from an intrinsic need to promote the quality of life for those around you.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “if you want something done right, you do yourself.” That is the springboard for leaders, even lacking the time, energy, experiences, and even resources launch from when embarking upon the mission when helping others. Now there are many different reasons leaders choose to well…. lead. Some want glory, some want to leave their mark on the sands of time, and some simply strive to be a point of light in the community.

For me, it all started when my mom told me that you should always leave a place better than when you found it. Now, she might have just been talking about my room, but I’ve found that to be the secret to every success I’ve ever had as a leader.

With that as my compass – I’m hoping you’ll join me as I recount some of my greatest stories and recounting of lessons learned in my journey to be a public servant. Then, we will dive into an exploration of all things leadership and service and leadership as a service.

Till next time, Stay Caffeinated
Yours in all things leadership,
Dennis
